    Session A10
Title: Particle Power - Joshi No Chikara ( (in English with Japanese examples)
       Presenter: Grace Ho, Richmond
Description: Particles are an intriguing part of Japanese grammar. They have the power to change the entire meaning of a sentence. Many students find particles a challenge, so I’ve been trying to find ways to help them overcome these particles and feel empowered once they do so. In this workshop, I hope to share with other teachers some lesson ideas that engage students and fuel them with PARTICLE POWER!
    Session B10
Title: Make It Real – Communicative Tasks for Japanese 12
       Presenter: Colleen Lee, Coquitlam
Description: My favorite tasks require kids to use their skills in a supportive, structured and - most importantly - communicative way. From idea to implementation, I will share a couple of these including the Fortune-Telling, Murder Mystery and Taste-Test activities. Students love the confidence they develop – and I love to see them interacting non-stop for 40 minutes!
    Session C10
Title: Introducing A New Japanese Language Education Promotional Kit ((in English and Japanese)
Presenter: Shunko Muroya, Japan Foundation and Alberta Education
Description: The Japan Foundation Toronto and Alberta Education are in the process of developing a web-based information kit for promoting Japanese language education at the K-12 level in Canadian schools. The kit will have contents similar to the one developed by the Japan Foundation LA, and will include sections such as: "Start-up & Maintenance Guide for Japanese Language Programs," "Japanese Teachers’ Guide to Advocacy," "Administrators’ Guide to Japanese Language Program Advocacy, and "Parents’ Guide to Helping Their Children & Japanese Program Succeed." The trial version will be published in early September 2007. In this session, I would like to introduce the kit and explore possible ways to utilize the kit with the session participants. www.nihongomemo.com

  • New audio-visual series「エリンが挑戦! 日本語できます」by the Japan Foundation  New!!

AccessTV is broadcasting “ERIN'S CHALLENGE! I CAN SPEAK JAPANESE” on every Friday at 10:30am in Alberta (From August 24 though January 2008, 25 episodes all together on Channel 9).

“Erin’s challenge! I can speak Japanese” is a new audio-visual resource developed by the Japan Foundation and NHK, which revolves around skits (language study mini-dramas) showing Erin, an exchange student at a senior high school in Japan, in twenty five everyday situations. Each skit is structured to achieve a particular goal in Japanese.

This new resource is designed not only to gain a command of the Japanese language, but also to promote cultural understanding through shots of various Japanese scenes. Rather than simply showing Japanese culture, the material uses a variety of techniques to encourage learners to compare Japanese culture to their own and give them the opportunity to think about their own cultural background.
