press release ("2008年
ひな人形商戦 今年のトレンドは?")
at the Japan Doll Manufacturers Association
(日本人形協会)
website, about
530,000 girls were born in Japan in 2007
and 371,000 (70%) of them are
the first daughter of the family. This year, the doll
manufacturing industry is expecting 85%
of those first daughters (310,000)
will be given a new set of hina dolls at an average
expenditure of 150,000 yen, and the
industry also expects that some second and third
daughters will be given a new set. They estimate a
market of about 5.8
billion yen (about US$
486 million!!). The peak hina
set purchasing time is from mid January to the first
week of February and 90% of
the sets sold will be purchased by grandparents,
especially on the mother's side, as a gift to their
granddaughter. The price ranges of the best-selling sets
are not low, as you can see below:
