"Kyokashotai (教科書体)" font is
one of the Japanese font types where the characters look very
close to handwriting. This type of font is ideal for
beginner level students learning how to write Japanese. Here
are some examples.

Motoya
Co., Ltd.(株式会社モトヤ)
offers a number of font sets free to download from their
website for
non-commercial use, and "Kyokashotai" font is one of
them. The following are the instructions
for downloading "Kyokashotai (教科書体)"
font from Motoya website. |
| |
|
|
Step 1 |
The
Motoya website requires you to register prior to
download. Click on the following URL. The register page will
appear. Type in (or copy and paste) your email address, then
click on "読者登録" button. The
confirmation page will appear. Check your email address and
click on "読者登録" button. Another
similar looking page will appear. Your registration is then done.

 |
| Step
2 |
You will receive
a registration completion notice email from Motoya shortly.
Click on the URL where it says "<ダウンロードはこちらからどうぞ>" (or copy
and paste the URL to your browser's web address box).
If you don't receive the
registration completion notice email from Motoya within 10
minutes, the message might have been sorted out as a junk
mail. Check your junk mail box.
If mojibake (meaningless letters/characters) occurred to the
message from Motoya, then click on the second URL you see in
the message (or copy and paste the URL to your browser's web
address box).
The download page URL starts with
<http://www.motoya.co.jp/product/............> (the rest
of the URL is undisclosed). |
| Step
3 |
The following
download page will appear. The first part is an agreement
between the free download font users and the Motoya company
that is offering this free font downloads. What it says
basically is that you are not supposed to use these font for
commercial purposes. So as long as you use the font for your
classroom handouts and worksheets, you will be fine.
 |
| Step
4 |
Scroll down to
the fifth orange line (counting from the first red line)
where it says "教科書体," choose the one you like from the three
"Kyokashotai" font types, and click on the "お試し
True Type" (violet) button.
 |
| Step
5 |
The "File
Download - Security Warning" dialogue box will appear. Click
on "Run". A download dialogue box appears and then
disappears quickly. Then the “Internet Explorer - Security
Warning” dialogue box will appear. Click on “Run”.
|
| Step
6 |
A dialogue box
("WinSFX32・・・", but this may vary)
will appear. Click on the "Reference" button. The
"Extracting directory" dialogue box will appear. Make sure
"C:" is showing in the "Drive" box, then
double click on "C:" in the
"Directory" box, then click on "OK."
 |
| Step
7 |
The dialogue box
("WinSFX32・・・", but this may vary)
will come back to the front. Make sure "Install Directory"
is indicating "C:" and click on "OK." The dialogue box will
disappear.

|
| Step
8 |
Click on "Start"
and click on "Control Panel." The "Control Panel" will
appear. Double-click on "Fonts"
 |
| Step
9 |
The "Fonts"
dialogue box will appear. Click on "File" and click on
"Install New Font." The "Add Fonts" dialogue box will
appear. Make sure "Drives" is indicating "C:,"
double-click on "C:" in the
"Folders" box, and scroll down until you see "NTモトヤ教科書"
in the "Folders" box, click on it, and then click on "OK."
 |
| Step
10 |
"NtMotoyaKyotai........"
should be in the "List of fonts" box now. Click on it and
highlight it. Also click on "NTモトヤ教科書"
and highlight it. Click on "OK"
to finish the processes. A dialogue box will appear and
disappear quickly. The installation is complete!
 |
| Step
11 |
Now it’s time to
see if it works or not. Open a new document in Microsoft
Word. Switch the mode to Japanese. Click on “▼” in the font
selection window and scroll down to where it says “NTモトヤ教科書”
and click on it. Type in hiragana, katakana or kanji in the
text field and check if it appears in "Kyokashotai" font.

There appear to be three "Kyokashotai" to choose in the font
selection box. "教科書2" and
教科書2等" look pretty much the same. "教科書2KP"
seems to be a proportional font type, which means the width
of characters are different depending on the character. Some
characters are wider than others, and some are skinnier. |
