Furigana (ruby) - small hiragana reading above kanji (for MS Word and MS Outlook only)

If you need to print out the instructions on this page, click the icon to download the document in the MS Word format (110KB).

Step 1 To use "furigana" function, you need to customize your MS Word first. Click on "Tools" in the task bar, then click on "Customize".

The "Customize" dialogue box will appear. Click on the "Commands" tab. In "Commands," choose ”Format" from the "Categories" box and click on it. Then scroll down the "Commands" box towards the end and click on "Phonetic Guide." You need to drag "Phone Guide" and drop it in the task bar/toolbar. To drag and drop, keep pressing the item (Phonetic Guide), move the cursor up to the task bar, and release it.

The "Phonetic Guide" icon should appear in the task bar. The "Phonetic Guide" icon and the "Spelling Check" icon look similar, so please make sure you have the "Phonetic Guide" icon.

Step 2 Highlight the kanji and click on the "Phonetic Guide" icon in the task bar.

Step 3 The "Phonetic Guide" dialogue box will appear. Check the following and click on "OK":
"Ruby text" box - Make sure the reading is correct. Sometimes there are more than one reading for a kanji word.
"Alignment" box - You can change the distribution of hiragana for each kanji here.
"Size" box - You can change the font size of "furigana" here.
"Preview" box - You can preview how furigana appears in this box.

     * If you are using an older version of MS Word, the "Ruby text" box might appear blank. In this case, move the
cursor in the box and type in the furigana yourself.

The following should appear.

Step 4 You can do the same to a sentence or a short paragraph instead of an individual kanji word. Highlight the sentence/paragraph and click on the "Phonetic Guide" icon in the task bar.

Step 5 The "Phonetic Guide" dialogue box will appear. This time you need to scroll down to check the whole paragraph.

Step 6 If necessary, move the cursor in the box and make changes. Then click on "OK."
