If you need to print out the instructions on this page, click the icon to download the document in the MS Word format (166KB).

This section will be divided into A) making the whole document in vertical text direction, and B) making a part of the document in vertical direction with the rest horizontal.

A)  Making the whole document in vertical text direction
A - Step 1 Click on "Format" in the task bar, and click on "Text Direction."

A - Step 2 The "Text Direction" dialogue box will appear. Click on the middle rectangle in the "Orientation" box, then click on "OK." The whole page/document should be Tategaki (vertical) text direction.

B) Making a part of the document in vertical direction with the rest horizontal. This involves slightly complicated steps.
B - Step 1 Move the cursor to the line where you want the vertical text, and insert a table (click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Insert," and click on "Table").

B - Step 2 The "Insert Table" dialogue box will appear. Choose 1 for both "Number of columns" and "Number of rows" and click on "OK"

B - Step 3 A table appears. Type the text in the table. Then highlight the text in the table, click on "Format," click on "Text Direction," choose the orientation you need, and click on "OK."

B - Step 4 The table is across the page and too big. so you need to change the size of the table.

You should be able to change the size of the table by dragging both the horizontal lines and vertical lines of the table. Move the cursor right on one of the lines. The cursor changes its shape from an arrow to something like "
→". When this appears, press down the left button of your mouse, keep pressing it and move it to where you want the line to be, then release the button. The table should have changed the size. Do the same until you get the desired size of the table.

If you can't change the size by dragging, move the cursor in the table and click, click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Select," and click on "Table." The table is selected (alternatively, you can select the table by the following. Move the cursor to the left-hand top corner of the table. A small square will appear at the corner. Move the cursor on the small square and click on it). Click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Table Properties," click on "Table" tab, check the "Preferred width" box,
and then change the width as desired.
B - Step 5 Change the text wrapping setting for the table to "Around." Select the table (move the cursor in the table and click. Then click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Select," and click on "Table"). Click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Table Properties," click on the "Table" tab, and click on "Around" under "Text Wrapping," then click on "OK."

B - Step 6 Move the table to the desired location by dragging it. Move the cursor to the left-hand top corner of the table. A small square will appear at the corner. Move the cursor on the small square, press the left button of your mouse and, holding it down, move the table to the desired location, and release it.

B - Step 7 Make the table invisible so that the lines of the table won't show when you print the document. Select the table (move the cursor in the table and click, then click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Select," and click on "Table"), click on "Table" in the task bar, click on "Table Properties," click on the "Table" tab, and click on the "Borders and Shading" button. In the "Borders and Shading" dialogue box, click on "None" under "Setting," click on "OK," and click on "OK" again.

B - Step 8 The line of the table should be shaded and it won't show when you print the document.

If you prefer to have the table line printed, skip "Step 7."
